Indonesia, South Korea develop waste management technology

Thepresidentpost.id - Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries is collaborating with South Korea to develop environment-friendly waste management technology.

This is one of the focuses of the cooperation that the ministry will carry out with Pusan National University, South Korea, through the establishment of a center for cooperation on environmentally friendly marine technology.

"Reducing marine waste and plastic is relevant to one of the ministry's blue economy policies, including cleaning the oceans through the participation of fishermen. We call it Love of the Sea program," Director General of Marine Spatial Management Victor Gustaaf Manoppo noted in his official statement here on Monday.

Manoppo remarked that cooperation was also carried out in developing technology in shipyards and the maritime sector of the two countries.

This collaboration is the first step towards creating healthier oceans through the use of technology that can reduce marine waste and plastic.

This effort will contribute to the conservation of the marine environment, the sustainable use of marine resources, and the achievement of national targets to handle the volume of plastic waste.

Meanwhile, Pusan University President Jeong In Cha stated that the Hydrogen Ship Technology Center is an example of an environmentally friendly ship to collect and process marine debris floating in the sea.

"The Hydrogen Ship Technology Center is attracting great attention at home and abroad for promoting development projects and being an example of an environmentally friendly ship that collects and processes floating marine debris," he stated.

In future, he said, Pusan National University (PNU) will make various efforts to strengthen joint research at the international level in the areas of engineering, environment, and marine.

The PNU will also hold student exchanges and cooperation in the development of maritime and environment-friendly policies.

He is optimistic that South Korea and Indonesia would maintain partnership that will contribute to the international community, such as by solving the marine debris problem, through future cooperation. (ANTARA)
