Thepresidentpost.id - Porto, Portugal - Indonesian karate athletes successfully won dozens of medals at the Maia International Karate Open (MIKO) 2023 held at Pavilhão Municipal de Gueifães I (Maia City Sports Hall – Porto) on (2-3/12). The Indonesian delegation secured a total of 10 gold medals, 2 silver medals, and 4 bronze medals. The competition brought together hundreds of karate athletes from 9 countries around the world (98 karate clubs/federations), as a platform to discover talented young karate athletes from various nations.

"We are confident that our athletes can bring home many medals because they have trained with discipline. Thanks for the support from the Indonesian Embassy in Lisbon, starting from the issuance of the invitation letter to this point," said Mr. Yoyo Satrio Purnomo, the head of the FORKI PB delegation. The Indonesian Embassy in Lisbon was also present to meet and provide direct support to Indonesian karate athletes on the first day of the competition.

The Indonesian Karate Delegation consisted of 24 individuals, including 17 athletes, 7 coaches, and officials. They competed in the KATA and KUMITE categories, ranging from the age groups of 10 to 17 years (elementary, junior high, and high school levels). This achievement is the result of coaching and full support provided by the Indonesian government, which selected and honed their skills under the guidance of professional and experienced coaches.

The victory in Portugal marks an important milestone in the history of young Indonesian karate athletes and enhances the reputation in the international karate community. With the support provided by the Indonesian government, these achievements can serve as inspiration for aspiring young athletes across the country. The Indonesian delegation arrived in the city of Porto on November 30, 2023, and will return to Indonesia on December 5, 2023.
